Small Library in Donghwa-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul Reopens After 24 Years of Renovation
Library Size Expanded More Than Twice, New Community Space Created
Plants Planted on Terrace and Camping Chairs Installed to Create a ‘Small Forest in the City’ Healing Space
Kim Gil-seong, Mayor of Jung-gu: “Beyond a Simple Reading Space, It Will Be a Place for Rest and Cultural Enjoyment”
The small library in Donghwa-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul, has completed renovations and reopened on the 4th.
Established in 1999 at the Dong Resident Center, the Donghwa-dong Small Library has been cherished as a knowledge repository for nearby residents for 24 years.
However, due to aging facilities and a shortage of reading space caused by an increase in book collections, the need for renovation was raised. Accordingly, the district invested approximately 490 million KRW and carried out remodeling over four months starting in January.
First, the library’s size was expanded to 247㎡, more than twice its original size. To achieve this, some adjacent common areas such as the lobby were incorporated into the library space.
The wall that blocked the outdoor terrace and reading room was also removed. In its place, large windows were installed to enhance the sense of openness. Various plants were planted on the terrace, and camping chairs and tables were set up to create a healing space described as a ‘small forest in the city.’
A new community space was also created. This will enable not only book reading but also various cultural activities at the Donghwa-dong Library.
A district official stated, “Taking this remodeling as an opportunity, we plan to expand the collection to include various genres such as comics, reflecting the high proportion of children and youth in the area.”
On the 3rd, the district held a concert to celebrate the reopening. About 40 residents and district officials attended the event, enjoying a pop-opera concert and a talk with an author.
Kim Gil-seong, Mayor of Jung-gu, said, “I am pleased to present such a wonderful space to the residents of Donghwa-dong,” adding, “I hope the Donghwa-dong Small Library will become a place not only for reading but also for rest, cultural enjoyment, and nurturing thoughts and hearts.”
