After Breakup Notice, Went to Home and Workplace with a Weapon
Sentenced to 1 Year and 6 Months in Prison... "There Was a Risk of Harm to Life"
A man in his 40s who visited the house and workplace of his ex-mistress to whom he had announced their breakup, impersonated a police officer to enter the house, and threatened her with a weapon was sentenced to prison.
According to Yonhap News on the 23rd, Judge Lee Eun-sang of the Chuncheon District Court Criminal Division 3 sentenced A (46) to 1 year and 6 months in prison and ordered him to complete 40 hours of a stalking treatment program on charges including violation of the Stalking Punishment Act.
On January 23rd, during the daytime, A visited the home of B in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, who had been in an extramarital relationship with him, rang the doorbell, and threatened, "I will destroy your husband's car." He is also accused of stalking B by following her after she left work at a restaurant where she was employed that same night.
At midnight the next day, A visited B's house again. He impersonated a police officer and asked to be let in. When the door was opened, he threatened B and her husband with a weapon, resulting in additional charges of special trespassing and special threats.
The court stated, "The defendant, enraged by the victim's notice to end their extramarital relationship, continuously visited the victim's residence and workplace, causing fear and anxiety, and threatened her with a weapon. There was a high possibility of causing harm to life, which is highly condemnable." Regarding the sentencing, the court explained, "The defendant's unstable mental state appears to have influenced the crime, and considering that the stalking behavior did not seem to have continued for a long period, these factors were taken into account in determining the sentence."
