59 Polluting Companies in Incheon Namdong Industrial Complex Caught Exceeding Wastewater Discharge Standards

Incheon City announced on the 21st that it conducted a special inspection targeting high-concentration pollutant-emitting companies within the Namdong National Industrial Complex, identifying 59 violators and taking administrative actions.

This inspection aimed to resolve water quality issues caused by illegal discharge of high-concentration wastewater into the Seunggi Sewage Treatment Plant and to strengthen management of air emission sites during the fine dust seasonal management period.

The inspection was conducted from the 20th to the 31st of last month, targeting 130 sites including plating industries that handle large amounts of specific air and water hazardous substances.

As a result of the inspection, 14 sites, including wastewater consignment companies and metal plating companies, were found to have specific water hazardous substances exceeding the emission limit standards in treated wastewater.

Additionally, 45 sites, including manufacturers of medical pharmaceuticals and animal feed, were caught operating air and wastewater emission facilities and prevention facilities not in accordance with operational standards.

The city imposed improvement orders and excess emission charges on businesses exceeding wastewater emission standards.

Four businesses that repeatedly exceeded water quality standards and two businesses that discharged water pollutants at levels 2 to 7 times above the permitted limits were each ordered to suspend operations.

For minor cases such as damage or neglect of air pollution prevention facilities, the city plans to issue warnings and impose fines as administrative measures.

An Incheon City official stated, "As a result of continuous special crackdowns on the Namdong Industrial Complex, the frequency of high-concentration wastewater inflow into the Seunggi Sewage Treatment Plant has decreased, and the number of businesses discharging beyond water quality standards has significantly reduced."
