Exhibition Success Story, Now It's About the Economy
Suncheon City, Full-Scale Expansion of Economic Territory in the Namhaean Era
Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Nogwan-gyu) is writing another ecological economic miracle following the successful hosting of the 2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo, after being finally selected on the 14th as the site for Hanwha Aerospace Co., Ltd.'s space launch vehicle assembly plant.
With the attraction of the space launch vehicle assembly plant, the city has secured an additional future core engine and a 100-year livelihood for Suncheon in the era of the space economy, which holds infinite value and potential.
In line with this, Mayor Nogwan-gyu visited the candidate site for the future advanced materials national industrial complex, the developing 2-2 Haeryong Industrial Complex, and Seonwol Agricultural and Industrial Complex to meet with officials and gather feedback on corporate difficulties.
He also met with the Director of the Jeollanam-do Job and Economy Headquarters and the President of Jeonnam Technopark to discuss proposals for designating the future advanced materials national industrial complex, establishing an integrated support system for industry-academia-research collaboration, expanding support for local SMEs, and constructing a new knowledge industry center for materials and components, marking the start of a full-fledged economic initiative.
Earlier, in February, Suncheon selected space, bio-food tech, ESG management, emotional robots, and wellness industries as five core strategic projects for the 8th term of the local government, continuing the success of the Garden Expo by attracting companies.
The butterfly effect of the Garden Expo's success is growing, with investment attraction worth 800 billion KRW from five companies and the creation of 500 jobs.
Moreover, Suncheon is gaining attention as a major advantage for investment attraction due to its excellent residential conditions for companies, simultaneous operation of Jeolla Line KTX and SRT, and the establishment of a metropolitan railway network including the Gyeongjeon Line. The abundant water supply from Juam Dam and Sangsa Dam, capable of supplying over one million tons of water daily, is emerging as a new competitive edge for attracting companies.
In addition, the city operates customized talent development programs aligned with corporate demand in aerospace and secondary batteries in cooperation with local universities, and is building industry-academia-research governance desired by companies to create an optimal investment environment.
To continue the early success of the 2023 Suncheonman International Garden Expo, which surpassed 1.4 million visitors just 17 days after opening, Suncheon is accelerating the expansion of its economic territory by increasing industrial complex sites for corporate attraction.
According to city officials, despite the busy schedule preparing for the Garden Expo, efforts are ongoing to secure funds for projects such as the 230 billion KRW Elastic Material Re-advancement Project, 40 billion KRW Hydrogen City designation, 30 billion KRW Seungju Bio-conversion specialized industry, 32 billion KRW Bio-specialized knowledge industry center construction, 3 billion KRW Autonomous Vehicle Valley development, and 600 million KRW Robot education, development, and demonstration specialized project, steadily addressing economic issues to complete a grand economic map for future Suncheon.
Mayor Nogwan-gyu, who has maintained a solid economic approach so far, stated, “We will expand support for promising local root companies in line with national strategic projects such as secondary batteries, and create favorable conditions for corporate investment through the establishment of corporate innovation parks and new national industrial complexes.” He added, “We will focus all administrative capabilities on creating livelihoods and jobs to quickly recover the local economy, which has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The economic initiatives of Mayor Nogwan-gyu, who is expanding new economic territories such as the space industry and Suncheon national industrial complex development, are drawing significant attention. Expectations are already rising as to whether the slogan “Economy, Suncheon-haseyo” will be realized.
