Cheonho-daero 124-gil (Neung-dong) Area, Alleyway Regeneration Project to be Completed in the Second Half of This Year
Expectations to Transform into Harmonious Alleyways through Improvements of Aged Walls and Fences, Creation of Rest Areas on Idle Land, and Upgrades to Uniform Road Name Plates and Mailboxes
Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) is transforming the Neung-dong alleyways around Children’s Grand Park into regionally specialized, customized alleyways that blend local assets with the alley environment.
The target area for the Neung-dong alleyway project is the Cheonho-daero 124-gil (Neung-dong) area adjacent to Children’s Grand Park, extending 726 meters with an area of 15,872 square meters. It was selected in 2021 for the Seoul-style Alleyway Regeneration Project, securing a budget of 1.1 billion KRW combining city and district funds. Last year, the project execution plan was established and detailed designs were completed, with full-scale construction commencing this year.
The Neung-dong alleyway area adjacent to the north side of Children’s Grand Park was once a high-end residential area due to its lush trees and scenic views. However, as the fences and walls around Children’s Grand Park aged over 40 years, they deteriorated and impaired the village’s aesthetics, raising calls for improving the alleyway environment to support sustainable residency.
Under the concept of ‘Hanaro (One Road),’ the transformation of Neung-dong alleyways is planned as ‘an alleyway for all where people and nature harmoniously become one.’ Each section has a theme with three regeneration strategies: ▲Bright Hanaro ▲Relaxed Hanaro ▲Warm Hanaro.
‘Bright Hanaro’
▲Improvement of the fence at the rear parking lot of Children’s Grand Park ▲Enhancement of the appearance of emergency exit retaining walls and fences ▲Design improvements of retaining walls and fences at Neung-dong Small Park ▲Upgrades to the retaining walls and fences at the north gate, creating a bright alleyway by improving the bleak fence and retaining wall sections so residents can enjoy walking the alleyways surrounded by nature.
‘Relaxed Hanaro’
This section reflects various resident demands, transforming previously dark and neglected spaces that caused discomfort due to drinking and smoking into comfortable rest areas and small resting spots for a brief pause during walks.
▲Pocket rest area on idle land (Neung-dong 135-33) ▲Rest area on leftover land (Neung-dong 138-6) are established to provide community spaces where residents can take a break amidst nature.
‘Warm Hanaro’
▲Improvement of road name plates and mailboxes ▲Installation of intersection alert devices ▲Floor improvements along Hanaro to create a warm alleyway where residents can live more conveniently and safely in harmony with nature.
Road name plates and mailboxes reflecting the unique characteristics of Gwangjin-gu Neung-dong will be designed to enhance visibility and blend with the surrounding green environment. Additionally, ‘intersection alert devices’ that convey warning messages through sound and light will be installed, and asphalt paving will be applied to alleyways with frequent vehicle traffic to enhance safety for both vehicles and pedestrians.
The Neung-dong alleyway project will be completed in the second half of this year.
The district is sharing the project direction with residents and passionately preparing for the transformation of Neung-dong alleyways by collecting diverse ideas from the community. We look forward to the refined appearance of Neung-dong alleyways, where residents and administration collaborate to find practical solutions and carefully create distinctive alleyways.
Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, stated, “This project, prepared over three years, will not only improve the residential environment around Neung-dong alleyways but also maximize their status as local landmarks. We also expect synergy effects by linking with Children’s Grand Park, a regional asset of Gwangjin-gu nearby.”
