Spitting on a car, throwing eggs, and sending barrage of text messages... A man in his 50s who was prosecuted for stalking his ex-wife even after their divorce received a suspended prison sentence.
The Ulsan District Court Criminal Division 2 (Presiding Judge Hwang Hyung-joo) announced on the 13th that Mr. A, who was indicted for violating the Act on the Punishment of Stalking Crimes, was sentenced to 6 months in prison with a 2-year suspension. He was also ordered to attend 40 hours of recidivism prevention lectures.
According to the Ulsan District Court, in November 2021, Mr. A visited the home of his ex-wife Ms. B, who lives in Gyeongnam, rang the doorbell, and caused a disturbance by spitting on Ms. B’s vehicle and throwing eggs at it.
For about two months, Mr. A sent 446 text messages to Ms. B, causing her distress, and posted around 20 defamatory comments on her social media.
It was revealed that Mr. A committed these acts after Ms. B avoided his contact and refused to communicate following their divorce.
The court stated, “Considering the frequency, severity, and methods of the stalking acts, the defendant’s criminal nature is poor,” but “took into account that he admitted to the crimes, showed remorse, and has no prior criminal record.”
