Thorough Safety Measures Including Disaster Prevention and Dormitory Fire Evacuation Drills at Frontline Schools
The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 10th that it will operate the Sewol Ferry Disaster Memorial Week until the 16th, conducting memorial events along with various safety education programs. The memorial space will be open until the 21st.
A memorial space has been set up on the first floor of the main building to light candles in remembrance of the Danwon High School students, and yellow ribbons and handwritten letters containing memorial messages have been prepared so that the education community can share the pain of the Sewol Ferry disaster.
On this day, Lee Jeong-seon, Superintendent of Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, and staff lit candles at the memorial space to console the spirits of the victims.
The online memorial hall will also be operated until the 21st. It consists of rooms for attaching cyber memorial ribbons, posting memorial messages, and sharing various materials related to the Sewol Ferry disaster memorial.
The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education has also planned a safety inspection tour to reinforce safety awareness.
Until June 29, inspections will be conducted at 81 public schools to prevent industrial accidents and improve working environments.
This includes 5 standalone kindergartens, 44 elementary schools, 23 middle schools, 5 high schools, 3 affiliated institutions, and 1 special school.
The inspection will comprehensively check whether supervisors have received job training, whether warning labels related to chemical use are attached, whether windows and other ventilation options are available, and whether safety signs are installed in places with hazardous machinery and risk of accidents.
After the inspection, if urgent safety measures are needed, an emergency action fund will be allocated to enable immediate improvements.
Additionally, fire evacuation drills will be conducted this month at 17 high schools with dormitories.
Assuming students are asleep at night in the dormitories, the drills will be conducted jointly with fire stations and 119 safety centers to enhance students’ immediate response capabilities in case of fire. More detailed education on evacuation procedures during fires, and the use of fire extinguishers and hydrants will also be provided to school officials and students.
Superintendent Lee Jeong-seon said, "Through education that remembers and honors the Sewol Ferry disaster, we will cultivate a sense of community and make our school spaces safer. For safe schools, we will conduct not only fire evacuation drills but also various education, inspections, and training to raise safety awareness on a regular basis.”
