‘Injury Worsens’ Woods ‘First Ever Withdrawal from Masters’

Woods Withdraws from Remaining Masters Round 3 Matches
Expected to Return at May Major PGA Championship

The "Golf Emperor" Tiger Woods (USA) withdrew from the Masters Tournament (total prize money $18 million) for the first time in his career.

Augusta National Golf Club, hosting the 87th Masters, announced on the 9th (local time) that "Woods withdrew after completing 7 holes in the 3rd round due to injury." The exact injury location or severity was not disclosed, but it appears to be a strain on his right leg, which was injured in a traffic accident in February 2021. This year's Masters presented a tough challenge for Woods due to rain and chilly weather starting from the second day of the tournament.

‘Injury Worsens’ Woods ‘First Ever Withdrawal from Masters’ Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the remaining matches of the Masters third round.

This is the first time Woods has withdrawn during the Masters Tournament. He has participated 25 times so far and completed every tournament except for missing the cut in 1996. Woods scored 3-over-par 147 through the second round, advancing to the third round tied for 49th place. He set a record for the most consecutive cuts made at the Masters with 23 appearances in the final rounds, tying the record held by Fred Couples (USA) and Gary Player (South Africa).

Woods barely made the cut line at 3-over-par and struggled in the harsh weather with rain during the third round. After completing 7 holes in the third round, he lost 6 strokes with two double bogeys and two bogeys. At 9-over-par, Woods was in last place among the 54 players who made the cut, and the match was suspended due to heavy rain. Woods was scheduled to continue the remaining holes of the third round but ultimately declared his withdrawal.

After finishing tied for 47th at last year's Masters, Woods withdrew after the third round of the major PGA Championship. He also did not participate in the US Open and missed the cut at The Open. Woods is expected to return at the PGA Championship, the second major tournament of the season, in May.
