Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, will hold a time to commemorate the victims of the Sewol Ferry disaster, share the sorrow and pain caused by the social tragedy, and reflect on safety issues.
Nam-gu announced on the 6th that it will operate the '4·16 Sewol Ferry Disaster 9th Anniversary Memorial Period' from the 12th to the 16th to embrace hope for a society that values life beyond remembering the victims and bereaved families on the 9th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry disaster.
Accordingly, Nam-gu plans to set up a memorial space inside the first floor of the government building. A large banner with the names of the 304 Sewol Ferry victims, who would have become mature young adults after nine years, will be hung, and a place for offering flowers will be installed below the banner.
In addition, a space will be created where people can share the pain of that day by leaving memorial messages and displaying books and photos related to the Sewol Ferry disaster.
The memorial space will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and any residents wishing to express their condolences and gratitude can visit the memorial space.
Also, on the afternoon of the 14th, a memorial event will be held at the Blue Road Square behind Bigsupo in Juwol-dong, Nam-gu.
Jung Sung-wook, the bereaved father of the late Jung Dong-su, a student of Danwon High School, will take the stage to engage in a sympathy talk with Nam-gu residents, and youth and residents will also hold memorial performances to hold the hearts of the Sewol Ferry victims and their families.
A Nam-gu official said, "As the time of longing has been long for the bereaved families and our people, we have overcome the painful times by being each other's support," adding, "I hope this will become a stepping stone that brings hope beyond memory."
