Hyundai Motor Company's Ioniq 6 won the 'World Car of the Year (WCOTY)' award at the 2023 World Car Awards. Following last year's Ioniq 5, Hyundai has become a brand holding the 'World Car of the Year' title for two consecutive years.
On the 5th (local time), Hyundai Motor Group announced that the Hyundai Ioniq 6 achieved a triple crown at the 2023 World Car Awards. The Ioniq 6 was selected as the 'World Car of the Year,' 'World Electric Car of the Year,' and 'World Car Design of the Year.' The Kia EV6 GT was also named in the 'World Performance Car' category. Hyundai Motor Group swept 4 out of the 6 categories at the World Car Awards.
Previously, Hyundai Motor Group achieved the remarkable feat of winning the World Car of the Year three times in four years, starting with the Kia Telluride in 2020, followed by the Ioniq 5 in 2022, and the Ioniq 6 in 2023.
In particular, the consecutive wins of the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 highlight the excellence of Hyundai Motor Group's dedicated electric vehicle platform, 'E-GMP,' which was the basis for developing these exclusive electric vehicles, a point emphasized by a Hyundai Motor Group official.
The World Car Awards, headquartered in Toronto, Canada, was launched in 2004. The judging panel consists of 100 automotive journalists from 32 countries worldwide, including Korea, the United States, Europe, China, Japan, and India, who select the winners each year through a secret ballot.
The World Car of the Year award categories include ▲World Car of the Year ▲World Electric Car of the Year ▲World Car Design of the Year ▲World Performance Car ▲World Luxury Car ▲World Urban Car, totaling six categories.
Thirty models were nominated for the World Car of the Year award, among which Hyundai's Ioniq 6, Kia's Niro, and BMW's X1/iX1 competed fiercely, with the Ioniq 6 ultimately winning. Additionally, the Ioniq 6 was selected as the 'World Electric Car of the Year,' surpassing premium electric vehicles like the BMW i7 and Lucid Air, and won 'World Car Design of the Year,' beating the Land Rover Range Rover and Lucid Air.
Furthermore, the Kia EV6 GT won the 'World Performance Car' category, beating internal combustion engine vehicles such as the Nissan Z and Toyota GR Corolla. In the remaining two categories, the Lucid Air was named World Luxury Car, and the Citro?n C3 was selected as World Urban Car.
Jang Jae-hoon, CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, said, "This result was made possible by the efforts of all Hyundai employees and partners," adding, "This award will serve as a driving force for Hyundai Motor Company to emerge as a global leader in the electrification era and to advance as a smart mobility solution provider."
