Skin Cancer: Hugh Jackman’s Advice "Always Apply Sunscreen"

Excessive Sunlight Exposure Causes Genetic Mutations
Primarily Occurs in Nose, Head, and Neck Areas
"Sun Protection Is Crucial... Tanning Is Unnecessary"

Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman recently revealed that he underwent a skin cancer screening and urged people to apply sunscreen to prevent skin diseases.

On the 3rd (local time), Hugh Jackman shared on his Instagram account that he had recently undergone a skin cancer screening. He said, "I had two tests because skin cancer was suspected," adding, "According to the doctor, it may or may not be skin cancer. I will know the results in 2-3 days. I will inform you as soon as the results come out."

In the video posted on Instagram, he is seen with a bandage on his nose. Hugh Jackman added about his symptoms, "It could be basal cell carcinoma." Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer caused by excessive sun exposure or tanning. According to the UK's National Health Service (NHS), the treatment success rate is 90%, and recovery is possible with timely treatment.

Regarding this, Hugh Jackman reassured his fans by saying, "Basal cell carcinoma among skin cancers is not dangerous," but emphasized, "I hope my situation serves as a reminder of the importance of sun protection."

In particular, Hugh Jackman repeatedly stressed the use of sunscreen. He said, "You must apply sunscreen. No matter how much you want to tan, it’s not worth it, so please trust me."

Previously, Hugh Jackman was diagnosed with skin cancer twice, in 2013 and 2017, and had the cancer removed through surgery. However, after being suspected of skin cancer again in 2021, he has been undergoing tests.

Basal cell carcinoma can be completely cured through surgery, but there is a risk of recurrence after surgery, so careful monitoring is necessary.

Basal cell carcinoma is known to occur when skin cells are continuously exposed to ultraviolet rays, causing genetic mutations. For this reason, it is often found on body parts that receive concentrated sunlight, such as the nose and head and neck areas. Also, people who frequently engage in outdoor activities have a higher risk of basal cell carcinoma. Applying sunscreen is the most important preventive measure.

Especially, Australia, where Hugh Jackman resides, is a continent with high sunlight exposure and is known as the region with the highest reported cases of skin cancer worldwide. According to the BBC, about 11,500 Australians are diagnosed with melanoma each year, and approximately 434,000 people receive treatment for other types of skin cancer.
