Kim Dong-yeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, promised to thoroughly investigate the cause of the collapse accident at Jeongja Bridge in Bundang-gu, Seongnam City.
On the 5th, Governor Kim posted on his social media service (SNS), "This morning, a part of Jeongja Bridge in Bundang-gu, Seongnam City collapsed, resulting in the death of one citizen and injury to another," adding, "We are controlling the site to prevent further damage."
He continued, "We will thoroughly investigate the cause to prevent similar accidents from occurring."
Meanwhile, at around 9:45 a.m. on the same day, an absurd accident occurred where the railing walkway of Jeongja Bridge collapsed. One pedestrian died and another was injured in this accident. Currently, two-way traffic on Jeongja Bridge (6 lanes in both directions) is being restricted.
The Jeongja Bridge where the accident occurred has a total length of 108 meters and a width of 26 meters. The bridge was completed in June 1993 along with the development of Bundang New Town. On both sides of the bridge, there are walkways approximately 2.2 to 2.5 meters wide, allowing pedestrians to cross on foot. The collapsed walkway section is about 50 meters on one side of the total 108-meter span.
Some are placing emphasis on the possibility that this accident was caused by human error. There are strong criticisms that the institutions responsible for strict management and supervision may have failed to conduct proper inspections.
