Namwon-si Prepares Various Science Experience Events to Celebrate Science Month

Namwon City in Jeollabuk-do plans to resume the 1-night 2-day family camp at Namwon Aerospace Astronomy Observatory, which had been paused due to COVID-19, in celebration of "April Science Month," and to open a Children's Science Experience Center.

According to the city on the 4th, the 1-night 2-day family camp promoted by Namwon Aerospace Astronomy Observatory is a program that anyone?families, couples, men and women of all ages?can participate in. It is a special program offered exclusively to guests staying at accommodation facilities linked with Namwon City, such as the Hanok lodging building of Hampau Sori Experience Center and the Hanok lodging building of Namwon Yechon.

During the 1-night 2-day camp, participants can receive 1:1 customized education services from astronomy experts, and telescope observations are conducted separately from the general visitors’ observation times, allowing for a deeper experience of celestial observation.

The Children's Science Experience Center, the first local government science museum in Korea to install a Jagyeokru (water clock), is located in the Gwanghanruwon Outer Arcade and is scheduled to officially open this month.

The experience center, which began pilot operation on the 14th of last month, consists of Hall 1, the Sundial Exhibition Hall, and Hall 2, the Water Clock Exhibition Hall. It exhibits interactive facilities based on Korea’s traditional science, such as the Angbuilgu (sundial) and Jagyeokru (water clock).

In particular, the Jagyeokru, the first installed by a local government, serves as the representative interactive facility of the Children's Science Experience Center and was produced as a model approximately 70% the size of the real thing from the production stage.

A science interpreter explains the Jagyeokru directly, and visitors can operate it themselves through an interactive demonstration program, which has received great responses from visitors.

At the observatory and the Gwanghanruwon VR Experience Center, a barista robot is always on standby to alleviate tourists’ boredom during program waiting and free time, offering three types of coffee, two types of juice, and soft ice cream.

Additionally, there are interesting attractions prepared where visitors can experience robot technology of future industries up close.

A city official said, “We hope many tourists will feel the charm of Namwon, which leads culture and future industries, through science experiences encountered in the hometown of culture and arts.”
