Kim Dong-yeon: "Gyeonggi-do Will Set an Example as a Community Living Together with People with Disabilities"

Kim Dong-yeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, emphasized his commitment to creating a Gyeonggi Province where people with disabilities can live well together.

On the 2nd, Governor Kim posted on his social media service (SNS), "Last Thursday, I met Kim Mi-ha, who was raising her developmentally disabled siblings alone and was given a terminal cancer diagnosis," and said, "Despite undergoing painful chemotherapy, Kim Mi-ha is making every effort to resolve the care issues for her children who will be left without parents."

He continued, "While listening to the story of the family with developmentally disabled members and contemplating the public role together, all attendees including myself shed many tears," and promised, "Gyeonggi Province and Uiwang City will provide an experience home for the siblings and arrange additional activity support time to offer 'seamless care.'"

Furthermore, he shared a touching story, "On the same day, my wife volunteered at 'Yangji-ui Jip,' a residential facility for people with severe disabilities in Gunpo. There, she met Haram, a 4th-grade elementary school student with a level 1 brain lesion disability who is paralyzed in the lower body," and added, "Haram was abandoned by a family broken up due to domestic violence when he was three years old."

However, "(Haram) has been living in the facility for seven years, commuting to school in a wheelchair, and always socializing brightly with friends," he said, adding, "My wife plans to become Haram's 'friend' and meet regularly every month."

Governor Kim stated, "Gyeonggi Province invites orchestras and choirs of people with developmental disabilities to its events to provide performance opportunities, and displays artworks by people with disabilities throughout government buildings," emphasizing, "We are also increasing various supports such as the 'Disabled People’s Nuri Account' and 'Gyeonggi Opportunity Viewing Ticket,' and through the newly established 'Social Economy Bureau' last December, we will also encourage employment of people with disabilities."
