Police "Considering Applying Charges for Distribution of Obscene Material"
A Korean YouTuber running a channel related to overseas travel is under investigation by the police following allegations that he conducted provocative broadcasts with local women in Thailand.
The Cyber Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police Agency announced on the 1st, "We received a report that a male YouTuber in Korea recently filmed scenes of inappropriate physical contact with Thai women at entertainment establishments in Thailand and uploaded them to YouTube."
The YouTuber reportedly also included content in the broadcast about the cost of prostitution in Thailand and exposed his donation account.
The police are verifying facts such as the identity and whereabouts of the YouTuber while conducting a legal review to determine whether charges of distributing obscene materials under the Information and Communications Network Act can be applied.
A police official stated, "We are reviewing precedents to determine whether the YouTube broadcast content can be classified as obscene material," adding, "If the charges are proven, we plan to book him."
Meanwhile, recent local Thai media have reported on the deviant behavior of Korean YouTubers targeting Thai women, sparking controversy. The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Thailand warned, "Internet broadcast content involving street hunting of locals or visiting entertainment establishments can be problematic as it may demean Thai people," and added, "Filming without consent may be punishable in Thailand due to violations of personal information protection and portrait rights."
