On the 31st, the National Cancer Center announced that it will hold a Cancer Science Forum on the theme of "Obesity and Cancer" on the 6th of next month at 2 p.m. in the International Conference Hall on the 8th floor of the Screening Building at the National Cancer Center in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi Province.

Obesity is mainly formed by diet and lifestyle habits and is known as a factor that increases the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Similarly, obesity is considered a serious risk factor affecting cancer occurrence, as the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) under the World Health Organization (WHO) has announced its association with cancers in 13 human body sites, including colorectal cancer, esophageal cancer, kidney cancer, postmenopausal breast cancer, endometrial cancer, multiple myeloma, thyroid cancer, ovarian cancer, pancreatic cancer, meningioma, gallbladder cancer, liver cancer, and stomach cancer. Nevertheless, the majority of the public remains unaware that obesity is related to cancer development.

This Cancer Science Forum was organized to invite experts from academia and research institutions to share the latest research findings and explore new research directions regarding the occurrence, malignancy, and immune system disruption caused by obesity and cancer. The forum consists of two sessions, featuring presentations on the risks of obesity related to cancer, obesity, energy metabolism and cancer occurrence, and immune system disruption caused by cancer cell metabolism.

In Session 1, detailed topics include ▲Obesity and Cancer: Natural Killer (NK) Cells (Professor Lee Jong-soon, Soonchunhyang Institute of Life Science) ▲Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) and Carcinogenesis (Dr. Cho Yu-ri, Targeted Therapy Research Division & Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Cancer Center, National Cancer Center) ▲Potential for New Drug Development Focused on Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) (Professor Kim Won, Department of Gastroenterology, Boramae Medical Center, Seoul National University).

In Session 2, presentations include ▲Energy Metabolism of Cancer Cells (Professor Yoon Hye-jin, Department of Life Sciences, Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology) ▲Lipid Biosynthesis and Cancer: The Fight for Survival (Professor Kim Jae-beom, Department of Biological Sciences, Seoul National University) ▲Progression of Cancer Malignancy in Smokers Due to High-Carbohydrate Diet (Professor Lee Ho-young, College of Pharmacy, Seoul National University).

Kim Young-woo, Director of the Research Institute at the National Cancer Center and chair of the Cancer Science Forum, stated, "Obesity, which is steadily increasing among modern people, acts as a health risk factor in many ways. Through this forum, we aim to share with experts, medical professionals, and the general public the processes by which obesity influences cancer occurrence and progression." He added, "Taking this forum as an opportunity, the National Cancer Center will activate cancer research related to obesity and strengthen efforts in developing related therapeutics and providing cancer information."

The forum will be conducted as a real-time online lecture, and registration is free of charge. For inquiries about pre-registration, please contact the Talent Development Team at the National Cancer Center.
