Japan has strengthened its export controls on semiconductor equipment. However, the South Korean government expects that the impact on domestic companies will be minimal.
On the 31st, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that the Japanese government has announced its plan to add 23 advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment items to the global export control list and has posted a draft amendment to the ministerial ordinance on the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's website to begin the public consultation process.
This measure by Japan is a global action that adds certain items, which were not previously subject to export controls, to the list of controlled items due to concerns over the military use of advanced semiconductor equipment worldwide.
An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy explained, "Our companies have already been importing equipment smoothly under Japan's existing export control procedures," and added, "Since the newly added items are also aimed at preventing military use, the impact on our companies is expected to be minimal."
The government stated that, based on the cooperative environment between the export control authorities of both countries established during the recent Korea-Japan summit, it will closely consult with Japan through export management policy dialogues to minimize the impact on domestic companies.
Furthermore, the government plans to continuously promote policies to strengthen the competitiveness of South Korea's materials, parts, and equipment sector by thoroughly analyzing the detailed items of Japan's semiconductor equipment export control measures.
