Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, has completed the installation project of pedestrian lights on walking paths this year.
According to Seo-gu on the 31st, this project targeted the areas around Pungam-dong Sports Park and 5·18 Park in Sangmu 1-dong, where there is heavy nighttime pedestrian traffic, installing 225 pedestrian lights with a project budget of 100 million KRW.
Every summer, Seo-gu has faced issues where the streetlights' illumination is blocked by the thickly grown roadside trees, causing inconvenience for residents walking on the darkened sidewalks. To resolve this, additional pedestrian lights that illuminate only the sidewalks were installed, securing the functional role of streetlights and significantly improving the brightness of the nighttime walking environment.
A Seo-gu official stated, “We will focus on creating safe and healing walking paths, prioritizing areas with high nighttime resident activity.”
Meanwhile, Seo-gu is currently building a GIS-based streetlight management system by assigning unique management numbers to over 10,000 streetlight poles and conducting a nameplate maintenance project with a budget of 100 million KRW to accurately identify the locations of malfunctioning streetlights and address repair delays.
