The Yongsan Police Station in Seoul arrested A (31) on the 30th on charges of setting a vehicle on fire.
A is accused of placing newspaper under a parked Grandeur passenger car in an alley of a residential area in Itaewon-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, and setting it on fire with a lighter at around 3:16 a.m. on the 28th (arson of a dwelling).
Judge Jeong In-jae, in charge of warrant hearings at the Seoul Western District Court, conducted a pre-arrest suspect interrogation (warrant hearing) for A that morning and issued an arrest warrant, citing concerns of evidence tampering and flight risk.
Immediately after the crime, A returned to his nearby home and then fled.
The police tracked his movements and apprehended A wandering the streets of Seongsu-dong, Seongdong-gu, Seoul, at around 5:30 p.m. that day.
The arson caused the Grandeur to be completely burned, and the fire spread to another vehicle parked nearby and the wall of a building, but there were no casualties.
A police official stated, "It is presumed that the crime was committed due to poor mental health."
