Science High Schools August 28-30, Autonomous Private High Schools, Foreign Language High Schools, and International High Schools December 6-8
This year, Meister high schools in Seoul will accept applications from October 16 to 19, and general high schools will accept applications from December 6 to 8.
The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education announced the '2024 Academic Year High School Admission Basic Plan' containing this information on the 30th.
Seoul's high school selection process is divided into early high schools (83 schools) with admissions starting in August and late high schools (235 schools) with admissions starting in December. Early high schools are selected by the school principal, while late high schools have a mix of selections by the superintendent and the school principal.
Among early high schools, science high schools accept applications from August 28 to 30, arts high schools including Seoul Arts High School from October 13 to 18, Meister high schools from October 16 to 19, and Seoul Physical Education High School from October 23 to 24 (special admissions) and October 30 to 31 (general admissions).
Specialized high schools accept applications from November 24 to 27 (special admissions) and December 1 to 4 (general admissions).
Among late high schools, general high schools, autonomous private high schools, foreign language high schools, and international high schools accept applications from December 6 to 8. Only Hankwang High School and Korea Samyook High School accept applications from December 5 to 6.
There are no significant differences in admission procedures and processes compared to the 2023 academic year.
Schools selecting students by the principal recruit students through self-directed learning assessments, practical exams, lotteries, middle school grades, and other methods that align with the school's founding purpose, according to the selection guidelines approved by the superintendent.
For superintendent-selected late high schools (general high schools and schools operating science-focused classes), the superintendent selects candidates based on middle school records, then conducts computerized lotteries and placements in stages considering students' preferences, placement conditions, and commuting convenience.
Applications for general high schools proceed in two stages. In the first stage, students can apply to two schools across all high schools in Seoul, and in the second stage, they can apply to two schools within their residential school district.
Applicants to autonomous private high schools, foreign language high schools, and international high schools who wish may simultaneously apply to the second stage of superintendent-selected late high schools.
Those selected in the early high school admissions are excluded from the late high school admissions.
Meanwhile, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education announced plans to improve and implement the evaluation method for superintendent-selected late high schools starting in the 2025 academic year, changing from relative evaluation based on percentile ranks to absolute evaluation.
