'Jeju One-Month Stay' Attracts 35,000 Annually... 40% Are Young Adults

Statistics Korea and SK Telecom Joint Analysis
9.33 Million Visitors to Jeju in One Year
Higher Income Linked to Preference for Monthly Stays Over Short-Term Visits

It was found that 35,000 people per year engaged in 'Jeju One-Month Living.' Among the visitors who stayed for one month, 2 out of 5 were young people under the age of 40.

On the 30th, Statistics Korea announced the results of the 'Jeju One-Month Living' analysis conducted together with SK Telecom.

This result was estimated by pseudonymously linking Statistics Korea's population registration data with SKT's communication information. According to this, from August 2021 to July 2022, there were 3.08 million visitors excluding Jeju residents and those who stayed for more than 180 days. When estimated by the total population, 9.33 million people visited Jeju during this period.

Among Jeju visitors, short-term visitors who stayed within 7 days accounted for 93.9%, making up the majority. One-month living visitors (stay period 28?31 days) were estimated at about 34,500, accounting for 0.4%, and long-term visitors staying 32 days or more were about 99,500, accounting for 1.0%.

Statistics Korea analyzed the demographic and mobile activity characteristics of 34,509 one-month living visitors out of the 9.33 million annual Jeju visitors. The results showed that young people under 40 accounted for the largest share at 39.0%, followed by those in their 40s and 50s at 32.7%, and those aged 60 and over at 28.3%. The proportion of those aged 60 and over in one-month living (28.3%) was 1.8 times higher than that of short-term visitors (16.0%), indicating a stronger tendency for one-month living compared to other age groups.

By region, residents of the Seoul metropolitan area accounted for the largest share of one-month living at 61.1%. One-month living often involved accompanying family members, accounting for 52.4%, with the highest proportion of family accompaniment at 56.5% among those aged 60 and over.

By income, those earning 30 million KRW or less accounted for the largest share at 42.3%. However, it was found that the tendency for one-month living increased compared to short-term visits as income rose.

One-month living visitors preferred accommodations outside Jeju City, in eup and myeon areas. In particular, Aewol-eup was identified as the original area for one-month living and was the most preferred accommodation area for all visitors. This was followed by Gujwa, Jocheon, Seongsan, and Hallim in order.

An official from Statistics Korea said, "This joint analysis can contribute to the establishment of Jeju tourism policies and marketing strategies," adding, "We expect that Statistics Korea's population registration data will be widely used as a key tool to support data-driven policies of the digital platform government."
