Busan City Holds '2030 Busan World Expo Hosting Support Green Clean Challenge' Campaign

In the Era of Climate Crisis, Lower the Earth's Temperature with X4!

National Participation Campaigns Held at Seoul Gwanghwamun and Busan Station

Theme: 'Global Transformation, Sailing Toward a Better Future'

Busan City will hold the ‘Greencle Challenge’ campaign to support the bid for the 2030 Busan World Expo for 11 days from March 30 to April 9 at locations including Gwanghwamun in Seoul and Busan Station.

‘Greencle’ is a compound word combining Green, meaning environment, and Bicycle. The ‘Greencle Challenge’ is a game where participants ride a bicycle that generates electricity as they pedal while enjoying cycling in front of a 75-inch large DID panel.

As participants pedal the bicycle to generate electricity, they can see the temperature gauge of the Earth displayed on the left side of the panel moving downward. The winner is the one who pedals the electric bicycle for 90 seconds and covers the longest distance.

This campaign coincides with the onsite inspection by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) in early April, allowing citizens to easily experience the theme and sub-themes of the 2030 Busan World Expo, “The Great Transformation of the World, Sailing Toward a Better Future,” through the ‘Greencle Challenge’ and other activities. It is part of a nationwide campaign to support the bid under the theme “Stop Climate Change with EXPO.”

① Greencle Challenge (April, June) ② Expo Marine Pavilion (April?October) ③ Green Wave (April?September)

The campaign venues include three locations: Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul (March 30?April 3), COEX K-pop Square in Seoul (April 4?April 9), and Busan Station Square (March 30?April 9). The campaign will feature citizen participation activities such as ▲ Greencle Challenge experience ▲ renewable energy experience ▲ introduction to the World Expo ▲ online signature support for the 2030 Busan World Expo bid.

In particular, the electricity generated through the Greencle Challenge during the campaign will be donated to vulnerable groups via Naver Happybean Good Action after the event concludes.

During the renewable energy experience program held alongside the campaign, participants can roll a piezoelectric pad with their feet to charge their mobile phones. In the online signature event, visitors can express their support on the official 2030 Busan World Expo website’s online signature page using tablet PCs provided at the booths.

The city plans to provide goods such as strap keyrings and reusable bags on a first-come, first-served basis to visitors who experience all the prepared programs. Considering the purpose of the Greencle Challenge event, the entire event will be conducted in an eco-friendly manner, using modular booths that can be reused to minimize waste generation.

Furthermore, following the Greencle Challenge campaign, the city will promote the Green Wave and Expo Marine Pavilion from April as part of the nationwide campaign themed “Stop Climate Change with EXPO.”

‘Green Wave’ is a social media campaign where participants film simple wave motions, symbolizing the butterfly effect where small actions can cause big changes, and post them on social networking services (SNS) to join efforts to stop climate change and support the 2030 Busan World Expo bid.

On April 1, a “Nationwide Wave Riding Proclamation Ceremony” will be held at Lotte World Busan. Along with this, various events and content created by influencers and supporters will be actively promoted to encourage nationwide participation in the wave-riding style.

At the ‘Expo Marine Pavilion’ installed from April at Lotte World Aquarium in Seoul, visitors can directly experience the seriousness of marine pollution and climate change through various exhibitions. This will promote the necessity and justification for hosting the 2030 Busan World Expo, seeking solutions together to create a sustainable global environment.

Mayor Park Hyung-jun stated, “Busan plans to make the 2030 World Expo a carbon-neutral expo by applying eco-friendly technologies and actively utilizing green energy when constructing the expo site. We prepared this Greencle Challenge event to spread this vision and purpose worldwide during the BIE inspection visit. We ask for your active participation and support so that we can successfully host the 2030 World Expo in Busan, Republic of Korea.”

The Greencle Challenge campaign will be held once more for 10 days in June.
