Top Award at the 2023 ENERGY STAR Awards in the USA
South Korea's leading home appliance companies, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, both received the highest award, the 'Sustainable Excellence Award,' at the U.S. '2023 ENERGY STAR Awards.' This recognition highlights their outstanding achievements in environmental protection and energy savings through home appliances.
The ENERGY STAR Awards, presented annually since 1993 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy, are the most prestigious awards in the environmental and energy sectors. The U.S. government evaluates energy-saving activities and the use of ENERGY STAR certifications among approximately 20,000 companies and organizations, awarding honors in eight categories including manufacturing, energy management, and retail. The highest honor, the Sustainable Excellence Award, is given only to companies and organizations that have been selected as the Partner of the Year in their category at least twice and have demonstrated outstanding achievements in environmental protection and energy savings.
Samsung Electronics was the only awardee to win two awards. It received the Sustainable Excellence Award for the first time in the Energy Management category, which honors companies with excellent power management performance at business sites, and for the tenth time in the Manufacturer category, which recognizes companies that develop highly energy-efficient products. Since winning the Manufacturer category Sustainable Excellence Award for the first time in the domestic industry in 2013, Samsung Electronics has continued to receive awards every year.
Samsung Electronics expanded its range of highly energy-efficient products such as washing machines, dishwashers, and air purifiers, obtaining ENERGY STAR certification for 474 products in the U.S. in 2022, a 24% increase compared to the previous year. Additionally, the SmartThings Energy service, which supports real-time monitoring and saving of energy consumption for devices connected to SmartThings, received ENERGY STAR certification in the smart home energy management field. Samsung Electronics uses 100% renewable energy at its U.S. business sites and improved HVAC and lighting facilities in major office spaces, reducing building energy consumption by 4.7% compared to the previous year. The number of buildings with ENERGY STAR certification increased significantly from six in 2021 to 12 in 2022, making Samsung Electronics the second-largest holder of building certifications in the U.S.
LG Electronics has been named an ENERGY STAR Award recipient for the 10th time this year since first winning the Partner of the Year Award in 2012. The company’s continuous release of ENERGY STAR certified products and various campaigns for energy savings have been recognized for their efforts to address global climate change, including in North America.
Last year, LG Electronics sold one ENERGY STAR certified product every six seconds in North America. The total ENERGY STAR certified products sold last year are estimated to reduce over 3.7 million tons of greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions during their lifetimes. This amount is equivalent to the total greenhouse gas emissions produced over the lifetime of 727,696 cars. It is also comparable to the greenhouse gas emissions from all households in Washington D.C., the capital of the United States, over two years, where more than 710,000 people reside.
Moreover, LG Electronics’ ENERGY STAR certified washing machines and dishwashers sold last year can save more than 130 billion liters of water over their lifetimes, which is enough to fill approximately 53,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Along with these positive environmental impacts, LG Electronics’ sales revenue from ENERGY STAR certified products reached $4.3 billion last year, about a 10% increase from $3.9 billion in 2021. Yoon Tae-bong, Vice President and Head of LG Electronics North America and U.S. subsidiary, said, "To realize LG Electronics’ ESG vision of ‘Better Life for All,’ we will continue to introduce products that combine differentiated performance and design with high energy efficiency, providing innovative customer experiences."
