Fire at Migrant Detention Center Near Mexico Border... 39 Dead

The Cause of the Fire Has Not Been Identified Yet

A fire at an immigrant detention center in a Mexican border city has resulted in 39 deaths.

On the 28th (local time), major foreign media including the AP reported that a fire broke out at an immigrant detention center in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, adjacent to El Paso, USA.

According to the Mexican National Institute of Migration (INM), 39 people have died and 29 have been injured so far due to the fire. The INM stated that at the time of the fire, 68 immigrants from Central and South America were detained at the center. Most of them are known to be from Venezuela.

The fire is believed to have started late the previous day. However, the exact cause of the fire has not been confirmed. According to foreign media, witnesses testified that the fire began in the area where immigrants were detained, and some were trapped inside the building during the incident. Local reports also suggested that the detained immigrants may have intentionally set the fire the day before.

In Ciudad Juarez, the number of immigrants is rapidly increasing as the United States maintains the 'Title 42' administrative order allowing the deportation of illegal entrants to prevent the spread of COVID-19. According to AFP, it is estimated that 200,000 people attempt to immigrate from Mexico to the United States each month.
