A bus driver in his 50s who caused a rear-end collision near a traditional market intersection, injuring people, has been criminally charged.
The Gwangju Northern Police Station announced on the 28th that Mr. A has been booked without detention on charges of violating the Special Act on Traffic Accident Handling (negligent injury) and is under investigation.
Mr. A is accused of rear-ending the back of a stopped van at an intersection near Malbau Market in Usan-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, around 6 p.m. on the 27th.
The accident is understood to have occurred when the city bus driven by Mr. A collided with the corner of the van that had stopped at a yellow traffic light. The impact caused the van to be pushed forward, crossing the sidewalk and crashing into the glass door of a commercial building.
Fortunately, no serious casualties occurred, but six passengers on the bus complained of mild pain and were taken to the hospital.
The police have not yet found any structural defects such as sudden unintended acceleration or brake malfunction. The accident is presumed to have been caused by Mr. A’s failure to maintain a safe distance and negligence in paying attention to the road ahead, and the exact circumstances of the accident are being investigated.
