Changwon Special City to Open 'Future-type Transfer Center' at Masan Station

Investing 53.3 Billion KRW by 2028

Creating Transfer Centers and Citizen Culture Plazas

Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam announced on the 28th that the city’s proposed “Masan Station MaaS Station” was finally selected in the “Future-type Transfer Center (MaaS Station) Pilot Project Contest” conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Committee (hereinafter referred to as Daegwangwi).

The “Future-type Transfer Center” is a transfer center seamlessly connected not only to existing transportation modes such as rail and buses but also to future mobility including Urban Air Mobility (UAM), autonomous vehicles, electric and hydrogen vehicles, and Personal Mobility (PM). Daegwangwi plans to establish the pilot project site as a core hub for the “mobility revolution” and “balanced development,” building it as a leading model to innovate future transportation.

Following this selection, the “Masan Station MaaS Station,” which will serve as a landmark representing Masan, will construct the “Masan Mobility Tower,” a building spanning from basement level 1 to the 4th floor, enabling transfers between all transportation modes within a single building. The plaza in front of Masan Station will be redeveloped into a fully pedestrian plaza, providing citizens with a comfortable resting area and a cultural space to enjoy.

Currently, despite Masan Station being a pivotal station in the Gyeongnam region, the station plaza experiences traffic congestion due to the intersection of passing vehicles, parking lots, and taxis, and the public transportation environment is poor, resulting in an average transfer time of over 7 minutes and 40 seconds to board the train.

In response, Hong Nam-pyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, has continuously emphasized the need to improve Masan Station since the launch of the 8th local government administration and has systematically prepared and devoted full efforts to ensure selection in this Daegwangwi pilot project.

The “Masan Station MaaS Station” planned by Changwon City aims to achieve a 60-second transfer time between connected transportation modes centered on Masan Station, enabling organic connection and transfer between rail, bus, tram, and future mobility such as UAM, autonomous vehicles, and PM within a single building.

Based on the characteristics of each transportation mode, the facility is divided into the Transit Zone on basement level 1, Personal Zone on the 1st floor, Driving Zone on the 2nd floor, Terminal Zone on the 3rd floor, and Air Mobility Zone on the 4th floor to enhance user convenience. The average transfer time is reduced to 55 seconds, an 85% reduction compared to the current time, significantly improving transfer services.

Additionally, by utilizing the sloped terrain of Masan Station to underground the access road and creating a fully pedestrian plaza in front of Masan Station, the project plans to support urban regeneration of the deteriorated area and revitalize the surrounding commercial district as a citizen cultural space where people gather.

The “Masan Station MaaS Station Pilot Project” is scheduled to begin the basic plan establishment service in the second half of this year, with a service cost of 500 million KRW, of which 250 million KRW is supported by national funds and 75 million KRW by provincial funds. Since more than 30% of the total project cost is expected to be supported by national funds, smooth project progress is anticipated.

Mayor Hong said, “The Masan Station MaaS Station pilot project is a very important project that can change the future of Masan,” and added, “We will prepare without any setbacks so that it can be established as a landmark representing Masan and a core hub to innovate the future transportation system.”
