The Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters (Chief Kim Su-hwan) announced on the 28th that it will issue a "Spring Season Lost Person Safety Accident Advisory" starting from the 29th, as outdoor activities such as bracken harvesting become more frequent.
Over the past three years, most lost person safety accidents in the province have resulted in rescues with individuals in good condition, leading to a decrease in casualties. However, the total number of accidents remains steady at 288 cases annually, requiring special caution.
By type, lost person safety accidents were most frequent during bracken harvesting (113 cases, 39%), followed by accidents during hiking and oreum exploration (109 cases, 38%), and accidents during Olle Trail and Dullegil exploration (66 cases, 23%).
In particular, a total of 142 cases (49%) of lost person safety accidents occurred in April and May, with 95% (107 cases) of lost person accidents during bracken harvesting concentrated in this period.
The accident-prone areas were mainly the eastern eup and myeon regions (172 cases, 60%), and the majority of lost person accidents during bracken harvesting also occurred in the eastern eup and myeon regions (74 cases, 65%).
On April 23rd last year, a woman in her 70s who was harvesting bracken alone in Gasi-ri, Pyoseon-myeon, got lost but was rescued by the fire department. Similarly, on April 25th, a woman in her 60s harvesting bracken in Ara-dong, Jeju City, got lost and was safely rescued by the 119 rescue team using drone search.
The Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters plans to strengthen rescue capabilities by issuing the lost person safety accident advisory, establishing a rapid response system to secure the golden time, and conducting search training using drones and 119 rescue dogs.
Additionally, they plan to raise awareness of safety accidents through focused publicity on actions to take when lost and safety rules.
Chief Kim Su-hwan of the Fire Safety Headquarters said, "To prepare for lost person safety accidents, avoid acting alone and always move with companions. Especially if you get lost, do not panic, report to 119, do not move, and wait until you are rescued."
