The Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education announced on the 27th that it will relax the qualification criteria for selecting sports instructors, which had been limited to holders of teaching certificates.
According to the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education, the qualification criteria for school sports instructors in the province have been restricted to those holding a "secondary school physical education teacher certificate (level 2 or higher)" or a "physical education practical teacher certificate."
However, only if no sports instructors are recruited in the first and second rounds of hiring announcements, eligibility to apply is granted to third-year students and graduates of four-year universities related to physical education.
There have been criticisms that the shortage of instructors holding the relevant certificates has made it difficult to operate educational programs.
To address this issue, the Office of Education plans to improve the selection criteria for sports instructors by relaxing the hiring qualifications to include "those whose highest education level is a junior college graduate or high school graduate, and who possess relevant field certificates or have practical experience," in accordance with Article 42 of the Enforcement Decree of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
Park Jae-hyun, Director of the Physical Education and Health Division, said, "By relaxing the qualification criteria for hiring sports instructors, the difficulties in operating school curricula will be resolved," and added, "We will strive to create a healthy and happy school sports culture for all students through training to strengthen the capabilities of sports club teachers and sports instructors, as well as operating on-site support teams for school sports clubs."
