Chungnam Province is set to redefine the boundary of Naepo New Town. This strategy aims to upgrade future development plans in response to changing conditions such as the designation of an innovation city, the attraction of public institutions, and the selection of new national industrial complex candidate sites, which are expected to increase the population.
The province announced on the 27th that it will carry out the "Basic Plan and Feasibility Study for the Expansion of Naepo New Town" over 15 months starting next month.
The population of Naepo New Town was 30,262 at the end of last month. However, considering that there are 17 completed apartment complexes with 16,794 households already occupied or about to be occupied, and 8 complexes under construction with 7,508 households, the province expects the population of Naepo New Town to increase to 60,000 by 2026.
In particular, with the influx of people into nearby industrial complexes and the arrival of public institution officials and their families from the Seoul metropolitan area due to the designation of Chungnam Innovation City, there is also an expectation that the population will reach 100,000 by 2030.
The planned expansion of the Naepo New Town development area, which will proceed in conjunction with this, aims to establish a new future development strategy for the new town reflecting a population of over 100,000 by 2030, and to promote mutual growth and coexistence through functional linkage with surrounding cities.
The expansion plan covers an area of approximately 10㎢. Taking into account Naepo New Town’s radial urban planning system and access roads, the province is considering redefining the expansion boundary to extend north-south between Hongseong and Yesan and eastward to Sapgyocheon.
The study will set the spatial scope as Naepo New Town and Hongseong-Yesan counties and the temporal scope as 2040. It will analyze development conditions of Naepo New Town, the current status of surrounding cities, future condition changes, and development demand, then propose specific expansion plans, urban development directions, and detailed plans for each section.
Kim Tae-heum, Governor of Chungnam Province, said, “We are considering various measures to complete Naepo New Town with a population of 100,000,” adding, “The study will be conducted until September next year to establish the basic plan for the expansion of Naepo New Town.”
