This project was conducted as a preliminary survey for successful execution, with plans to spread interest in the ecological restoration of the Yeongsan River and local hometown to the community's environmental movement.
The walk started on the 4th of last month from Yongsu in Damyang-gun, the source of the Yeongsan River, and proceeded every Saturday in seven sections, covering 145.1 km to Peace Square in Mokpo City, where the Yeongsan River estuary weir is located.
The final seventh section walk was made more meaningful by the participation of about 60 students from Mokpo Hongil High School along with their supervising teachers. Notably, Jo Ok-hyun, Chairperson of the Jeonnam Provincial Council Education Committee, also joined, adding prestige to the event.
Superintendent Kim Dae-jung said, "It is important that this is not a one-time event walk but a sustainable practical activity for the ecological restoration of the Yeongsan River," adding, "There is a golden time for everything. I hope the Symbiotic Waterway Project can serve as the golden time to breathe life into the struggling Yeongsan River."
Chairperson Jo Ok-hyun stated, "Among policies to manage water since ancient times, the best strategy is to let it flow naturally," and expressed hope that "this project will lead to reopening the blocked waterway of the Yeongsan River and restoring the status of the lifeline of Honam."
Meanwhile, starting next month, the Provincial Office of Education will operate the "Symbiotic Waterway Yeong·San·Gang Project" to foster ecological citizens through ecological exploration of the Yeongsan River and environmental conservation practice learning.
