Late March Bucheon and Anseong... Early April Yangpyeong and Yeoju Blooming
In Gyeonggi Province, cherry blossoms (king cherry trees) are expected to bloom starting from the end of March in Bucheon and Anseong, followed by the early April in the Yangpyeong and Yeoju areas.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Institute of Forest Environment announced on the 26th, "The cherry blossom blooming date in Gyeonggi Province is expected to be 3 to 10 days earlier this year compared to the average date of April 11 last year."
To predict the cherry blossom blooming date, the Institute of Forest Environment has been directly observing the shedding of brown scales from flower buds in mountainous areas since the 8th of last month.
Accordingly, cherry blossoms are expected to bloom starting from the last week of March in Anseong (Seoun Mountain) and Bucheon (Wonmi Mountain), followed by April 1-2 in Bucheon (Mureungdowon Arboretum), Osan (Mulhyanggi Arboretum), Anyang (Surisan), Namyangju (Chukryeong Mountain), and April 8-9 in Gwangju (Namhansanseong), Gimpo (Suan Mountain), Yangpyeong (Yongmunsan), and Yeoju (Hwanghaksan Arboretum).
This forecast is based on research data from the "Phenological Monitoring of Climate Change Vulnerable Forest Plant Species," a joint project conducted over the past 10 years with the National Arboretum and various local government forest environment research institutes.
Gil Yong-gyu, head of the Tree Research Team at the Institute of Forest Environment, said, "The blooming dates marked on existing spring flower bloom maps are based on statistical data using temperature factors, but our institute’s data is more accurate because it involves direct observation of flower buds." He added, "Cherry blossoms reach full bloom three days after blooming, so cherry blossoms in arboretums within Gyeonggi Province are expected to be in full bloom by early April."
