Development of Seoul's Representative K-Alley in Sinchon Changjeon-dong Area, Seodaemun-gu

Shinchon Changcheon-dong Area Commercial District Selected as 'Seoul Local Brand Commercial District Strengthening Target'

Aiming to Realize 'Passion Changcheon' through the 'Generational Empathy Old & New Project' over the Next 3 Years

Seodaemun-gu (District Mayor Lee Seongheon) announced that the Shinchon Changcheon-dong area commercial district was recently selected as a '2023 Seoul Local Brand Commercial District Strengthening Project Target,' securing up to 1.5 billion KRW in project funding.

Accordingly, the district will promote the 'Generational Empathy Old & New (Old & New) Project' for three years from this year through 2025, aiming to realize 'Passion Changcheon Dynamic Changcheon.'

The target area covers 128,500㎡ around 'Yonsei-ro 13-gil to Yonsei-ro 5-da-gil,' where 996 stores are located.

The district aims to create attractive content through collaboration among various industries such as LP bars, popular restaurants, and cultural spaces, revitalizing Shinchon's youth culture centered on university culture and music performances, and establishing it as a 'Seoul representative K-Alley.'

First, this year, a commercial district council will be formed with participation from merchants, landlords, and local institutions including Yonsei University, establishing a consultation system among Seodaemun-gu, the commercial district strengthening organization, and the commercial district council to set the commercial district vision and basic plan.

Based on this, from 2024 to 2025, collaboration with local brand stores, local creators (regional value creators), and anchor spaces will be pursued to ▲create storytelling and content ▲develop cultural events and one-stop alley courses ▲conduct joint marketing and stabilize commercial district management.

The 'Commercial District Strengthening Organization' responsible for project implementation will be operated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government this year and directly managed by Seodaemun-gu in 2024 and 2025.

In particular, beyond the secured budget, the Shinchon-dong Commercial Association has expressed willingness to bear part of the costs, demonstrating strong commitment to the project’s advancement.

Lee Seongheon, Mayor of Seodaemun-gu, stated, “By strengthening the local brand commercial district, we will revive the youthful and vibrant Shinchon and accelerate the co-growth of the Shinchon-Ewha commercial districts by expanding successful cases here to the Ewha commercial district.”

Since the beginning of this year, the district has abolished business restrictions in the Ewha front commercial district within the 'Shinchon District Unit Planning Zone' and is conducting the 'Shinchon-Ewha Area Revitalization Plan Study,' making multifaceted efforts to revitalize this long-stagnant commercial district.
