Held at Pangyo R&D Center with Cheonan Ship Foundation
Annual Memorial Event at Daejeon National Cemetery Since 2011
Yeonpyeong Naval Battle, Cheonan Ship, Yeonpyeong Island... These terms evoke North Korean provocations and the defense of the West Sea, deeply embedding the noble sacrifice and dedication of fallen heroes in the hearts of the South Korean people. One defense company has set up a photo exhibition within its premises to console the spirits of these heroes.
LIG Nex1 (CEO Kim Ji-chan) held a memorial photo exhibition on the 24th at its Pangyo R&D Center to honor the noble sacrifice of the "55 West Sea Defense Heroes" in commemoration of "West Sea Defense Day."
West Sea Defense Day is observed annually on the fourth Friday of March, marking its eighth year this year. It was established to honor the patriotic martyrs who defended South Korea’s seas against North Korea’s West Sea provocations, including the Second Yeonpyeong Naval Battle (June 2002), the Cheonan Ship sinking (March 2010), and the Yeonpyeong Island artillery provocation (November 2010).
As a leading defense company representing South Korea and embodying the values of national defense and veterans’ honor, LIG Nex1 held the "West Sea Defense 55 Heroes Memorial Photo Exhibition" together with the Cheonan Ship Foundation to reflect on the significance of West Sea Defense.
Additionally, the company posted memorial banners on its website and internal bulletin boards to raise awareness of West Sea Defense Day and placed a large floral wreath at Daejeon National Cemetery, where a memorial ceremony was held.
On the 24th, in commemoration of 'West Sea Defense Day,' a memorial photo exhibition honoring the noble sacrifice of the '55 Warriors' is being held at the LIG Nex1 Pangyo R&D Center.
LIG Nex1 employees spent time reflecting on the noble sacrifice and dedication of the heroes by viewing photos depicting the overview of the Cheonan Ship sinking incident, the salvage operation, and the funeral ceremony.
New employee researcher Ahn So-hee (Large-scale Air Defense System Research Institute) said, “This was a valuable opportunity to learn about the meaning of West Sea Defense, which I did not know in detail before, and the sacrifice and dedication of the West Sea heroes who protected South Korea’s seas. As an employee of a defense company, I will devote myself to developing advanced weapon systems, the cornerstone of self-reliant defense, to protect the freedom and peace we enjoy.”
LIG Nex1 has been holding memorial events every year at Daejeon National Cemetery since 2011 to honor the sacrifice of West Sea Defense heroes.
Previously, in 2010, it became the first defense company to establish a sisterhood relationship with the 30th burial site at Seoul National Cemetery. Subsequently, it formed sisterhood ties with the 4th burial site at Daejeon National Cemetery in 2012, and with the 11th and 12th burial sites at Yeongcheon National Cemetery in 2018, conducting graveyard cleanup activities and engaging in various national defense and veterans’ honor activities such as the National Cemetery New Year ceremony.
