60.2% View Summit as Humiliating
62.0% Support Reconsideration of Reimbursement Claims for Forced Labor Compensation by Next Government

Regarding the Korea-Japan summit, 6 out of 10 citizens viewed it as a humiliating meeting, according to a survey. Public opinion strongly favored a complete reexamination of the forced labor compensation claims against Japan by the next government.


According to a public opinion poll released by Media Tomato on the 24th (conducted by wireless ARS from the 20th to the 22nd on 1,061 adults aged 18 and over nationwide, commissioned by News Tomato), 60.2% of respondents evaluated the recent Korea-Japan summit as a humiliating meeting. Those who regarded it as a successful summit accounted for 34.1%.

President Yoon Suk-yeol visited Japan from the 16th to the 17th for a 1-night, 2-day schedule and held a summit with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.


Regarding the evaluation of the summit, more than 60% of all age groups except those aged 60 and over expressed rejection. However, among those aged 60 and above, the opinion that it was a successful summit was 51.2%, higher than the 40.2% who viewed it as humiliating.


When asked whether the forced labor compensation claims issue against Japan was resolved through this Korea-Japan summit, 62.0% responded that it should be reexamined from scratch by the next government. Those who said President Yoon’s promise not to exercise the claims should be upheld accounted for 32.0%.


Support ratings for President Yoon and the ruling party also showed a downward trend.


Positive evaluations of President Yoon’s governance dropped by 1 percentage point from the previous week’s survey to 33.5%, while negative evaluations rose by 1.3 percentage points to 64.6%. President Yoon’s approval rating, which was 40.2% in the first week of March, declined to 38.3% in the second week and 34.5% in the third week.


For the People Power Party, support fell by 3.4 percentage points from the previous survey to 34.6%. Since recording 43.2% in the first week of March, the party’s support has declined to 42.7% in the second week and 39.0% in the third week. The Democratic Party’s support rose by 3.4% to 48.8%.
