SK Ecoplant and Sudogwon Landfill Site Management Corporation Sign MOU for Greenhouse Gas Reduction Project

SK ecoplant announced on the 23rd that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Sudogwon Landfill Site Management Corporation for 'Cooperation on International Greenhouse Gas Reduction Projects to Jointly Respond to Climate Change.'

The international greenhouse gas reduction project involves reducing greenhouse gases overseas through technical support, investment, and facility installation, and transferring a portion of the reduction achievements back to Korea.

The two companies will initially focus on landfill gas collection projects. This project captures landfill gas that was previously released into the atmosphere from waste landfills and reduces methane through incineration and power generation methods. Since landfill gas generated during waste decomposition contains about 55% methane, which has a global warming potential 25 times higher than carbon dioxide, capturing and incinerating or using the landfill gas as fuel for power generation can significantly reduce greenhouse gases.

The primary development target areas are South American countries such as Bolivia and Peru, where a large amount of landfill gas is expected to be collected. The companies also plan to expand the project to Southeast Asian countries including Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.
