Industry, academia, and research institutes have joined forces to create an innovative ecosystem utilizing ultra-large AI models like OpenAI's ChatGPT.
The Korea Software Industry Association announced on the 23rd that an ultra-large artificial intelligence (AI) development council will be launched next month. The goal is to gather domestic companies to enhance related technological competitiveness so that Korean AI companies can secure a leading position in the global market. The association is organizing the council to include domestic big tech companies as well as AI-focused startups. Participants in the council include Naver Cloud and KT Cloud.
On the 27th (local time), visitors attending the world's largest mobile technology exhibition, 'Mobile World Congress (MWC 2023),' are exploring the KT booth. Held over four days until the 2nd, 'MWC 2023' is expected to be a mobile festival showcasing 5th generation (5G) and 6G mobile communications, satellites, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital transformation technologies. So far, the industry has voiced the need for a council that can foster cooperation and strategic alliances among companies. The association believes that Korea's ultra-large AI technology is not lagging behind global players and plans to provide aggressive support. Korea is the third country in the world to develop an ultra-large language model. In 2021, Naver unveiled the ultra-large AI model "Hyper Clover." Korea has also maintained a top-tier position in AI-related research papers and patent competitiveness, demonstrating strong capabilities. However, it is still evaluated that foundational AI technologies and computing power are insufficient.
The council plans to identify various legal and regulatory improvement tasks and actively communicate with the government and the National Assembly. The government has designated this year as the inaugural year for AI becoming part of everyday life. The Digital Platform Government Committee will unveil cloud-based ultra-large AI administrative services through the "Digital Platform Government Roadmap." The Ministry of Science and ICT is expected to announce the industrial policy direction for ultra-large AI within this month. The Personal Information Protection Commission will release policy directions such as the "National MyData Innovation Roadmap" in the first half of this year. To promote the development of the ultra-large AI industry, discussions are underway to minimize privacy infringement factors throughout the entire process of data collection and usage.
Cho Jun-hee, president of the Korea Software Industry Association, said, "Ultra-large AI has the scalability to transform our lives and businesses," adding, "To secure technological superiority in overseas markets, it is necessary to create a related ecosystem and platformize it."
