[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Su-yeon] Following consumer complaints about the distribution of so-called "fatty Samgyeopsal" during the "Samgyeopsal Day" discount event on the 3rd, the government is stepping up quality control measures.
On the 22nd, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced that it will strengthen quality control in cooperation with processing and distribution companies to prevent the recurrence of issues related to the distribution of excessively fatty Samgyeopsal. Additionally, it will create and distribute quality control manuals covering trimming standards, removal of excessively fatty parts, and inspection procedures.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, inspections and supervision of quality control at processing and distribution companies will be intensified. Companies with inadequate quality control will face disadvantages in policies such as support projects for modernization of slaughtering and processing facilities.
On-site evaluations will also be strengthened during brand certification assessments, providing incentives to excellent brands and penalties to those that fall short.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs plans to establish recommended standards for labeling the fat content of Samgyeopsal by consulting with the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, consumer organizations, and others, so that the industry can provide consistent and reliable information to consumers regarding fat content.
