Generous Donations to Host Expo by Pooling Private Funds
A businessman from Busan generously donated a whopping 3 billion KRW to support the city’s bid to host an international event.
On the 22nd at 5 PM, Busan City announced at City Hall that Kang Byung-jung, chairman of Nexen Group, had donated 3 billion KRW to support the bid for the 2030 Busan World Expo.

This donation was reportedly made by Chairman Kang using his personal funds as a gesture of support and encouragement for the successful hosting of the 2030 Busan World Expo, ahead of the upcoming on-site inspection by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) scheduled for early April.
The World Expo to be held in 2023 is currently embroiled in a fierce competition among candidate countries, with the final host city decision set for November.
Busan City is currently busy preparing to welcome the inspection team in April, and Chairman Kang’s generous donation has provided significant support during this critical time.
Park Hyung-jun, Mayor of Busan, emphasized, “This year is a turning point for the bid to host the 2030 World Expo, and we will concentrate all our administrative capabilities to convey our passionate commitment to the BIE inspection team in April.”
Mayor Park added, “In response to Chairman Kang Byung-jung of Nexen Group’s generous donation at this crucial time for Busan’s future, we will devote all our efforts to securing the hosting rights for the event.”
