Expected Renovation of Aging Buildings and Improvement of Urban Aesthetics in Eup Center

The Uiryeong County Council in Gyeongnam held the 275th extraordinary session, during which Assemblyman Jo Soon-jong (Uiryeong-gun District A) delivered a 5-minute free speech at the first plenary session on the 21st.

He proposed the necessity of installing a roundabout at the central intersection with traffic lights in Uiryeong-eup to improve traffic flow, traffic safety, and urban environment maintenance in the Uiryeong-eup downtown area.

Assemblyman Jo explained the background, saying, “Since 2010, when roundabouts, officially introduced as a government design guideline, began to be implemented in earnest, eight roundabouts have been operating in Uiryeong-gun.”

He cited data analyzed by the Korea Transport Institute, explaining, “Over the past 10 years, the operation of roundabouts nationwide has resulted in a 76% reduction in fatal accidents and a 21% decrease in travel time.”

He added, “The installation of roundabouts is expected to contribute to the establishment of an advanced traffic culture where drivers reduce speed, show consideration, and yield to others.”

Furthermore, he stated, “Renovating old buildings to install roundabouts will greatly help secure space and improve the urban landscape,” and requested that “the purchase of old buildings and land around the central intersection be proactively pursued.”

Assemblyman Jo urged, “I ask the relevant public officials to pay more attention and effort to the roundabout project, which involves large-scale project costs and administrative procedures such as urban planning changes.”

Meanwhile, the Uiryeong central intersection, which has a single lane in one direction, causes considerable inconvenience to residents due to traffic congestion caused by signal delays on market days.
