Protests erupted as the passage of a pension reform bill centered on raising the retirement age became likely in the French National Assembly.
On the 20th, after a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister ?lisabeth Borne, submitted by the opposition, was narrowly defeated in the National Assembly, the pension reform bill submitted by the government automatically passed the Assembly without a vote.
Upon hearing this news, protesters gathered at Place de la R?publique in Paris.
Some French lawmakers also joined the protest ranks. As signs of escalating unrest appeared, the police moved to disperse the crowds. However, sporadic protests continued late into the night in other parts of Paris.
According to France Info, more than 240 fires broke out in Paris following the pension reform bill. The police arrested 2,434 people.
