Department of Visual Design Conducts Motivation Semester for New Students

Senior members of the startup clubs in the Visual Design Department at Dongmyung University taught juniors how to utilize ‘ChatGPT (conversational AI service) and generative AI’.

Recently, the Visual Design Department at Dongmyung University conducted a ‘Freshman Motivation Semester (1 credit)’ led by seniors from three startup clubs in the department, in the form of a workshop on ‘ChatGPT (conversational AI service) and generative AI’.

The participating clubs were ▲Icecape (President Kim Heeje, Advisor Professor Won Jongyun) ▲Bisang (President Jo Sehee, Advisor Professor Won Jongyun) ▲D-Cap (President Uh Hyesun, Advisor Professor Kim Jaeik).

In the second semester of 2021, due to the pandemic, the Visual Design Department utilized a metaverse platform for non-face-to-face classes, and in 2022, they conducted an AI-linked content creator training course supported by the Korea Creative Content Agency, continuously updating their AI utilization capabilities. With support from the SW-Centered Business Group, a metaverse SW-linked major has also been established and is currently being operated.

Seniors from the Visual Design Department startup club at Dongmyung University are teaching the class of 2023 freshmen how to use generative AI programs.

Based on their previous experience with collaboration tools and AI utilization, the major students had seniors directly conduct a ‘ChatGPT and generative AI workshop’ for juniors.

Startup club seniors Kim Heeje, Jo Sehee, and Uh Hyesun said, “At first, we were fearful as designers when we first encountered generative AI, but by steadily using it, we were able to glimpse various opportunities,” adding, “We want to leave a good example of designers utilizing AI in startup clubs.”

Professor Won Jongyun of the Visual Design Department explained and demonstrated the functions of ChatGPT, as well as platforms that enhance art and design work efficiency such as DALL·E2 and Midjourney (AI that generates images from text), to all faculty members of the department on the 8th.

Department head Jung Wonjun said, “We plan to expand creative classes by utilizing generative AI in courses for enrolled students and the metaverse SW-linked major, and to experience and respond to the latest versions faster than other local departments with the same or similar majors.”
