Ssireum Team Wins Bronze Medal in University Division Team Competition

Kim Jun-seok of Dong-A University Ssireum has reached the top of the warrior class.

Dong-A University (President Lee Hae-woo) announced on the 21st that Kim Jun-seok, a player of the university's Ssireum team (coach Lee Young-ho), recently won the championship in the under 95kg warrior class at the 53rd Chairman's National Ssireum Championship.

The Dong-A University Ssireum team also won a bronze medal in the college division team competition held recently at the Mungyeong Indoor Gymnasium in Gyeongbuk. Kim Jun-seok (4th year, Department of Physical Education) defeated the Yongin University player 2-0 in the college division individual final with a spectacular Baegigi technique to claim the championship.

Kim, who served as the captain of the Ssireum team last year, had repeatedly faced defeat in finals since entering university, but this year, he dominated the sandpit at this first tournament. Lee Si-won and Kim Min-gyu, who placed 2nd in the under 80kg (Sojang class) and under 85kg (Cheongjang class) respectively, and Lee Jun-su, who placed 3rd in the under 75kg (Gyeongjang class), also showed strong performances.

Having won the National City and Province Team Ssireum Championship last year, ending a 7-year drought in team titles, the Dong-A University Ssireum team recorded their 35th team championship overall, securing the title of a ‘traditional powerhouse.’
