Creating a Space of Memory to Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Opening

Namhae-gun, Gyeongnam Province, is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the opening of Namhae Bridge in 2023 by creating a nostalgic space filled with the memories and wishes of residents and hometown visitors, and is currently accepting messages of hope.

Namhae Bridge, completed in June 1973, is the oldest suspension bridge in South Korea. It has been a symbol of the joys and sorrows of Namhae residents and a renowned tourist destination loved by many people nationwide.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Namhae Bridge’s opening, Namhae-gun is carefully collecting the voices of its residents.

They plan to gather various memories related to Namhae Bridge, including those from residents born in 1973, the year the bridge opened, residents who crossed the bridge on foot at the time of its opening, and those who remember scenes from its construction.

The ‘Namhae Bridge Memory Space’ will display residents’ and hometown visitors’ handprints, messages of hope, and words of blessing, and participants are being recruited until the 31st of this month.

Applications can be made by searching for ‘Namhae Bridge’ on the KakaoTalk channel, or by contacting and applying through the Namhae-gun Office Tourism Development Team.

Jung Joong-gu, Director of Tourism Promotion, said, “This year, marking the 50th anniversary of Namhae Bridge, which has been a source of pride for us Namhae people, we hope to commemorate this moment and preserve its record so that Namhae Bridge will be remembered for the next 50 years, and even 100 years. We encourage many residents to participate.”
