Amazon, which cut 18,000 jobs, to lay off another 9,000 employees

Amazon, which undertook large-scale layoffs earlier this year, is initiating additional restructuring.

According to the U.S. economic media CNBC, Andy Jassy, Amazon's Chief Executive Officer (CEO), announced in a notice sent to employees on the 20th (local time) that an additional 9,000 employees will be laid off over the coming weeks. This comes just a few months after conducting massive layoffs of 18,000 employees from late last year through early this year.

This additional restructuring is being pursued as part of cost efficiency measures in response to an uncertain economy. CEO Jassy stated, "We have considered the uncertainties that exist in the near future," adding, "The top priority of this year's annual plan is to become leaner while strongly investing in long-term key customer experiences. We believe this will enable meaningful improvements in customers' lives and across Amazon as a whole."

He confirmed that the impact will be felt across divisions such as Amazon's cloud computing, human resources, and advertising.

In the United States, as recession warnings grow louder, restructuring moves including layoffs have been continuing mainly among tech companies since the second half of last year. Following restructuring at companies like Microsoft and Google Alphabet earlier this year, some companies have begun a second round of restructuring this month. Recently, Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, also announced an additional layoff of 10,000 employees, just four months after laying off 11,000 employees in the second half of last year.
