Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Provides Support to 680,000 University Students
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Korea Agency of Education, Promotion and Information Service in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced on the 20th that they have selected 41 universities to participate in the '1,000 Won Breakfast' project.
The 1,000 Won Breakfast project provides high-quality breakfast (rice or rice-processed products) to university students with a high rate of breakfast skipping for 1,000 won. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and universities jointly support the habit formation of breakfast among young people and the expansion of rice consumption culture. If a student pays 1,000 won, the government contributes 1,000 won, and the school supports 1,500 to 3,000 won, allowing students to receive breakfast worth 3,500 to 5,000 won.
An official from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs explained, "As the food expenses burden on university students has recently increased, enthusiasm for participation in the project at universities nationwide was high this year. Since the total number of applicants from universities greatly exceeded the initially planned 500,000, the ministry secured additional budget and significantly increased the number of supported participants to 680,000."
The 41 universities participating in the 2023 Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and 1,000 Won Breakfast project are 11 universities in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon (Seoul National University, Incheon National University, etc.), 4 universities in Gangwon (Kangwon National University, Sangji University, etc.), 6 universities in Daejeon and Chungcheong (Chungnam National University, Soonchunhyang University, etc.), 12 universities in Daegu, Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongsang (Kyungpook National University, Pusan National University, Pohang University of Science and Technology, etc.), and 8 universities in Gwangju and Jeolla (Kunsan National University, Chonnam National University, etc.).
Jeon Han-young, Director of Food Policy at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, said, "The purpose of the 1,000 Won Breakfast project is to promote healthy eating habits by having breakfast, increase rice consumption, and at the same time reduce the food expense burden on students in this era of high prices. The government will do its best to maintain rice supply-demand balance through expanding rice consumption by diversifying support for generation-specific customized rice consumption culture, including continuously expanding the 1,000 Won Breakfast project."
