Gyeongsangnam-do plans to reduce the financial burden on farms that decrease greenhouse gas emissions.
On the 17th, Gyeongnam Province announced that it will implement a voluntary greenhouse gas reduction project for agriculture and rural areas and recruit farms to participate in the external projects of the agricultural sector emissions trading system.
On the same day, officials from 18 cities and counties in the province were gathered to introduce the voluntary greenhouse gas reduction project, and opinions were collected from farms in cities and counties struggling with rising heating costs as well as from city and county officials regarding support projects in the horticulture sector.

According to the province, the voluntary greenhouse gas reduction project is a program where farmers apply low-carbon agricultural technologies such as renewable energy facilities and energy-saving facilities to reduce greenhouse gases, and the government certifies the reduction amount and pays 10,000 KRW per ton (t) of reduced emissions.
Farmers participating in the project also receive support such as project planning consulting and monitoring.
The external project of the agricultural sector emissions trading system supports farms that are not subject to emissions trading system allocation to apply low-carbon agricultural technologies to reduce greenhouse gases, get their achievements certified, and trade carbon emission rights in the carbon market through consulting and other assistance.
The province plans to recruit participating farms from April 3 to 28.
Later, a demand survey for necessary equipment and facilities will be conducted to support horticulture farms in reducing heating costs.
An official from the province said, “By concurrently implementing the renewable energy facility support project and the energy-saving facility project for horticulture farms, we aim to reduce the management cost burden on farms. We expect high demand from farms as they can gain additional income outside of agriculture through the reduction and external projects.”
