Unreported Lodging Business 'Up to 2 Years Imprisonment'
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 19th that it will conduct crackdowns on unregistered illegal lodging businesses at tourist sites for about six weeks from the 20th to April 30th.
Considering the recent increase in foreign tourists visiting Korea following the lifting of foreign entry restrictions, the police plan to conduct joint crackdowns with six local governments, including Seoul City.
There have been concerns that unregistered illegal lodging businesses fall into a safety blind spot since management and supervision are under local governments. Accordingly, the police decided to crack down, citing high risks of crimes such as illegal camera installations due to the absence of managers. Additionally, inspections for illegal filming, including the installation of miniature cameras, will be conducted simultaneously.
To operate a lodging business, one must have appropriate facilities and equipment according to the Public Health Control Act and register accordingly. Violations are punishable by imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of up to 20 million won. In the case of illegal filming, penalties include imprisonment of up to seven years or a fine of up to 50 million won.
A representative of the Seoul Tourism Police Unit stated, "Since unregistered lodging businesses and illegal filming can damage the national image, we will strengthen preventive crackdowns to eradicate illegal activities in tourism."
