Seoul City and LCK Co-Host for the First Time

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 16th that it will host the finals of the ‘League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK)’, which determines the strongest esports team in South Korea, at the Jamsil Indoor Stadium over two days on the 8th and 9th of next month. For the first time, Seoul and LCK will co-host the event to expand the base of the Korean esports industry.

The ‘League of Legends Champions Korea (hereafter LCK)’ is the Korean professional league for the popular game ‘League of Legends (LoL)’, which has over 100 million monthly active users. The finals will feature matches among three teams, with 20,000 spectators attending. The finals will be broadcast live worldwide in seven languages over two days, including Korean, English, Italian, Chinese, Vietnamese, French, and Japanese. Last year, the event recorded a peak concurrent viewership of 5.17 million. This is the first time in four years since 2019 that the Spring Finals will be held at the Jamsil Indoor Stadium in Seoul.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government will support the venue to ensure that 20,000 esports fans can safely watch the matches. LCK will conduct the ‘Esports Culture Tour’, a companion program that is a key project of Seoul, and on the day of the event, 10 companies supported by the Seoul Game Contents Center operated by Seoul will participate to create promotional spaces and game play experience booths.

Meanwhile, Seoul is providing one-stop support from game development to commercialization to promote the game industry and esports, which are considered promising future industries, and plans to expand support for small and medium-sized game companies to enter overseas markets, including participation in overseas markets in the future.

Kim Tae-gyun, Director of Economic Policy at the Seoul Metropolitan Government, said, “By co-hosting the LCK Spring Finals, the most popular domestic league, we will provide small and medium-sized game developers with opportunities to promote to 20,000 spectators and global viewers, and start the ‘Culture Tour Companion Project’ for culturally marginalized groups who usually have limited access to esports opportunities.” He added, “We will strengthen investment and support for nurturing future esports talent and fostering small and medium-sized game companies to revitalize the game industry and esports, which are next-generation core cultural industries.”
