Establishment of a National Space Launch Vehicle Industrial Complex

Gohung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Young-min) announced on March 15 that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has officially designated Gohung-gun as a new national industrial complex (Space Launch Vehicle National Industrial Complex).


This is the first time since the establishment of Gohung-gun that a ‘national industrial complex’ has been attracted, marking a groundbreaking achievement that lays the foundation for leading the space industry, a core strategic industry of Gohung-gun.

Gohung-gun is believed to have received high evaluations for its clear concept, emphasizing the development of the launch vehicle industry, and continuous cooperative networking with the National Assembly, central government ministries, and Jeollanam-do also played a significant role in the designation of this new national industrial complex.


The Gohung Space Launch Vehicle National Industrial Complex will be developed near the Naro Space Center in Bongrae-myeon, Gohung-gun, with an investment of approximately 380 billion KRW by 2030, covering an area of about 1.72 million square meters (approximately 520,000 pyeong). According to the government policy of fostering a private-led space industry, the plan is to establish essential infrastructure for space development and cluster launch vehicle-related companies to create a growth hub for the space launch vehicle industry.


Governor Gong Young-min said, “The designation of this new national industrial complex, along with last year’s designation of the space industry cluster ‘Launch Vehicle Specialized Zone,’ is the greatest achievement realized together with the citizens’ aspiration to build a space and aerospace-centered city.” He added, “On behalf of the 62,000 residents of Gohung-gun and 700,000 Gohung-gun expatriates, I express deep gratitude to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, related ministries, and Jeollanam-do for their efforts in securing the national industrial complex designation.”


He continued, “This national industrial complex designation and the related derivative projects are expected to serve as a strong catalyst for growing into a large county with a population of over 100,000 in 10 years,” and emphasized, “We will devote all our efforts to ensure the national industrial complex is developed without any setbacks, in line with the government and Jeollanam-do’s direction for fostering the aerospace industry.”


Meanwhile, a county official stated, citing expert analysis, “The establishment of the national industrial complex and the influx of numerous launch vehicle-related companies within the complex are expected to generate about 4.9 trillion KRW in production inducement effects and create approximately 20,000 jobs,” adding, “The Space Launch Vehicle National Industrial Complex will play a leading role in regional economic growth.”


Furthermore, the official said, “Investment attraction is the key to success for the national industrial complex, and we will focus all efforts on attracting anchor launch vehicle companies, ventures, and startups to pass the preliminary feasibility study in the future.”
