Hansol Paper Collaborates with Samsung Welstory to Develop Eco-Friendly Paper Packaging

Hansol Paper Collaborates with Samsung Welstory to Develop Eco-Friendly Paper Packaging Kim Heon, Head of FSC Business Division at Samsung Welstory (left), is signing an agreement with Choi Seung-yong, Head of Industrial & Packaging Business Division at Hansol Paper.

Hansol Paper announced on the 15th that it has signed a business agreement with Samsung Welstory, a food and beverage service specialist, to develop eco-friendly paper packaging aimed at strengthening ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives.

Samsung Welstory provides food and beverage services at over 500 business sites nationwide. Through this agreement, the two companies will jointly develop eco-friendly paper packaging that can be applied to Samsung Welstory's various in-house cafeteria takeout product lines.

The packaging will feature Samsung Welstory's exclusive custom paper and water-soluble coating called "Terabas." The package lids will use C-rPET (recycled PET) to enhance eco-friendliness and minimize environmental impact.

By combining Hansol Paper's experience in developing various packaging papers such as colored and patterned papers with its production know-how, the company plans to develop custom paper that emphasizes Samsung Welstory's unique nature-friendly texture. Additionally, Hansol Paper will apply its independently developed Terabas coating.

Terabas coating offers the advantage of high recyclability as it allows paper containers to be separated and disposed of as paper waste after use. It provides water resistance and heat resistance comparable to conventional plastic coatings, and has low food residue, making it suitable for various types of food packaging such as soups, rice, and fried foods.

The packaging has obtained domestic and international eco-friendly product certifications, including Eco-label certification (EL606) and recycling certification (UL2485), as well as safety certifications for food packaging from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR). It is applied in various uses such as cafe franchises, delivery containers, and meal kits.

The eco-friendly paper packaging developed through this agreement will be entirely produced by Hansol Paper’s subsidiary, Sungwoo NB Tech. Established in 1981, Sungwoo NB Tech is a paper container manufacturing specialist company that has led the eco-friendly paper packaging sector for over 40 years. Recently, it expanded its factory to produce square-shaped food boxes and trays, broadening its product portfolio beyond its existing core circular containers.

A Hansol Paper official stated, “As demand for eco-friendly products increases, customer demand is also rising. Based on the shared goals of eco-friendliness and health, we will strengthen ESG management with Samsung Welstory and create a sustainable environment where customers can participate in eco-friendly initiatives.”
